Number Typing Test
Prices, dates, phone numbers: type texts full of numbers and find out how fast you are on the number row.
Tip: for meaningful results, use a physical keyboard.
Why practice numbers?
Most typists slow down a lot as soon as numbers show up, because their fingers have to leave the home row. Invoices, spreadsheets, addresses and dates are full of numbers, so typing them without looking saves a lot of time at work.
Which finger types which number?
In touch typing, the left pinky types 1, the left ring finger 2, the left middle finger 3 and the left index finger 4 and 5. On the right hand, the index finger types 6 and 7, the middle finger 8, the ring finger 9 and the pinky 0. Always return to the home row after each number.
Tips for the number row
Start slowly and aim for accuracy rather than speed. Reach for the number without moving your whole hand, and look at the screen instead of the keyboard. After a few days of practice, your number speed gets close to your normal typing speed.
Frequently asked questions
Is a slower speed with numbers normal?
Yes. Most people type numbers 20 to 40 percent slower than normal text. Regular practice closes the gap.
Does this test use the number pad?
No, the test is meant for the number row above the letters. You can still use the number pad if you prefer.
