Frequently asked questions
How is the typing speed (WPM) calculated?
WPM means words per minute. One word counts as five characters including spaces, so 300 correctly typed characters in one minute equal 60 WPM.
What is a good typing speed?
The average is around 40 WPM. 60 to 80 WPM is fast, and more than 100 WPM is professional level. Accuracy matters as much as speed.
Is BetterTyping free?
Yes. The typing test, lessons and multiplayer races are completely free. An account is optional and saves your results and streaks.
How can I learn touch typing?
Start with the lessons: they introduce new letters step by step and show which finger to use for every key. Practice 10 to 15 minutes a day.
Which keyboard layouts are supported?
BetterTyping supports the German QWERTZ and the English QWERTY layout. You can choose your layout in your profile.
