Typing Test for Programmers
Brackets, operators, quotes: type real lines of code and find out how fast you are when it's not just plain text.
Tip: for meaningful results, use a physical keyboard.
Why code is different
Code is full of symbols that are rare in normal text: brackets, braces, semicolons, arrows and quotes. Many of them need Shift or AltGr, and they are often typed with the pinky. Developers who type them without looking keep their focus on the problem instead of the keyboard.
What you type here
The texts are short lines of JavaScript, Python, SQL, Elixir, Rust, Java and shell commands, the kind of code you write every day. Each line is a real, valid snippet.
How to get faster at typing code
Practice the symbols you need most, especially brackets and quotes. Use both Shift keys, so one hand presses Shift while the other types the symbol. And learn the shortcuts of your editor: the fastest code is the code your editor completes for you.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my WPM lower than in the normal typing test?
That's expected. Symbols are harder to reach than letters, so almost everybody types code slower than prose.
Which keyboard layout works best for programming?
Many developers prefer the US QWERTY layout because brackets and braces are easier to reach than on the German QWERTZ layout.
